Tips for Using Respondus

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

Before the Assessment

Remind students to install LockDown Browser on the device they will use for their assessment. You can send them this FAQ that includes detailed instructions for different devices.

Once you successfully work through LockDown Browser installation, share these best practices with your students.

Schedule a practice quiz so that you and they can get familiar with how Respondus Monitor actually works. This is what the company suggests:

Direct students to use the Help Center prior to their first exam. With LockDown Browser open, log into the course and select the Help Center button the toolbar. From there, run the Webcam Check and the System & Network Check to make sure everything is working properly. If a problem is indicated, students can search for a solution in the Knowledge Base. Troubleshooting information can also be emailed to your institution’s help desk.

Leave the practice quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can check their setup from a different computer.

Watch this video prepared by Michelle Cook to help you visualize the process from start to finish.

On the Day of the Assessment:

Go into your dashboard and test your link to make sure all is in order.

Require the class to join a Zoom check-in just prior to the start of the assessment. This will allow you to troubleshoot any problems BEFORE the assessment begins. You can make sure everyone is present and that their equipment is working.

After the Assessment

Here are instructions for how to review webcam videos:

1. Return to the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard in the Moodle course.

2. From the context menu to the left of the test title, select Class Results.

3. A roster of the students in the course is shown, along with the date, time, duration of the test, review priority, and grade (if applicable).

4. Click [ + ] to expand the section for a student.

5. Details of the startup sequence and the exam session are shown in thumbnails. Click a thumbnail to view the video from the time indicated. Videos can be marked as reviewed or have comments added by the instructor.
