Inclusive Teaching in the Remote Classroom

Dear Faculty Members:

Hope Term B is off to a good start. This email it meant to serve as a resource for how you might create a more inclusive learning environment in the remote classroom. Many students with disabilities rely on supplementary notes, as well as the option to record lectures, to provide equal access in the traditional classroom. While we do have notetakers working diligently right now, we believe the recording of live zoom lectures can benefit both students with access needs as well as more traditional learners. Having the option to go back and re-watch content that they are struggling with can be extremely beneficial. Additionally, academic coaches and tutors will be better able to assist their students if they are able to review portions of the course lectures.

Attached you will find 3 documents to help you provide these recordings, should you choose to do so. They provide the following content:

  1. How to record zoom lectures, or allow individual students to record them

  2. How to save and post your lecture to make it available to students

  3. How to use auto-caption/transcription software (available within zoom) to provide even greater access

I would advocate for the recording of as many courses as possible, but I realize there may be some concerns about this. I am happy to set up times for questions and conversations around these issues. Thank you for going above and beyond to support our students during these unprecedented times.
