How can higher education reconcile the desire to return to the classroom while simultaneously honoring the call for more flexibility and online course options?

The Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph (ACSSJ) is offering a faculty development series this spring which aims to grapple with such contradictions and provide insights on how we can improve student learning and engagement.

The first session was held on Tuesday, January 10th, 2023, and explored the transformative power of digital tools and technologies on higher education. This Technology and Teaching Workshop consisted of short presentations by four panelists and then a Q&A open to the audience. You can watch the full panel discussion on YouTube.

Together the panelists detailed the “pedagogical implications from teaching in different modalities” with special attention to equity issues for both faculty and students. For example, in the area of accessibility, “viewing educational material on a smartphone” was discussed, along with tips for faculty to start “thinking about technology (use) across all modalities.”

Be sure to watch the full discussion for insights from the panelists on the timely and relevant questions raised by guests:

  1. How can we (educators) ‘embrace’ ChatGPT?

  2. How can we address student (& faculty) wellness (especially regarding recommended practices in an online setting)?

  3. How can we implement conflicting requests (between students' desire for flexibility provided by online access and their desire to be ‘back’ in person)?

Other topics in the Q&A included the practice of “ungrading”, time management, and communication with students (e.g., texting).

This series will continue through the spring with sessions on student motivation, quality of learning, and what’s new post-pandemic. See the ACSSJ website for more information.
